State Route 300 Corridor Study – SR6 (Glenwood Avenue) to Shaws Corner Road   State Route 300 is an important east-west connection in Kent County, allowing people to travel southwest from Clayton to the Delaware-Maryland state line. Although the corridor is mostly made up of rural locations, there are parts of the road that currently have congestion issues. The traffic volume on SR 300 is projected to rise in the coming years, and congestion will continue to increase if improvements to the roadway are not made. SR 300 was identified in Dover Kent MPO's Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) as a road that will likely see increasing traffic volume, which is why it was selected for further study.   This corridor study will focus on the portion of SR 300 between SR 6 (Glenwood Avenue) and Shaws Corner Road. The purpose of the study is to examine the existing conditions of SR 300, which include traffic volumes, modes of travel (including bicycle and pedestrian use), planned improvements, residential and commercial development, and crash history and other safety data. In addition to identifying the existing conditions, this study will recommend roadway improvements to alleviate the safety and congestion issues on the road. Public engagement is a central part of the study, and several public workshops are planned so that the public can give direct feedback throughout the process. The study will take approximately twelve months to complete, and it is expected to be finished in the summer of 2027.

US 113 is an important road in the Milford area. People use it every day to get to work, school, stores, and other destinations. During the summer, it also carries heavy beach traffic.  As Milford and surrounding communities grow, safety, congestion, and access along the corridor have become more challenging. The section of US 113 included in this study is displayed in the map below, and extends from SR 1 at the north end of Milford, in Kent County, to Hudson Pond in Sussex County. This study is a partnership between the City of Milford and the Dover Kent Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), with support from the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and Sussex County. Together, these agencies are working to better understand how US 113 works today and what challenges people may face in the future. Why This Study Is Happening Milford is growing, and traffic on US 113 is changing. This study looks at safety, traffic, and travel conditions today and how they may change in the future. It will use the best available data and tools to evaluate the corridor and the Milford area, but this study will not make recommendations to address the needs that are identified.  What the Study Will Look At The study team examined: How traffic changes throughout the yearSafety trends and crash history along the corridorHow intersections, driveways, and entrances workHow people drive, walk, bike, and travel along the corridorTransportation issues identified through data and community feedback To better reflect summer travel patterns, multimodal traffic counts were collected in early summer 2026, shortly after the school year ended, when seasonal traffic volumes are more representative of peak conditions.   What was Found? The study found several common issues along the corridor. The sections below summarize what we learned about traffic, safety, and roadway conditions.   TRAFFIC Traffic is heaviest in the commercial area of Milford between North Walnut Street and Lakeview Avenue. This stretch is the most built-up part of the corridor because it contains Milford's commercial core and is a primary crossing of the Mispillion River. This section of the corridor carries traffic volumes similar to other major highways in Delaware. SAFETY Most crashes occurred at corridor intersections and along the commercial stretch of Milford. The highest density of crashes occur on and around the intersection of US 113 and Delaware Route 14/North Front Street. As well as the intersection of  US 113 Airport Road/Northwest 10th Street. This stretch of Milford, from the Delaware Route 1 Bypass to the Mispillion River, experiences more than double the crash rate of similar roads elsewhere in Delaware. ROADWAY People walking and biking face gaps in sidewalks, pathways, and bicycle lanes along the US 113 corridor. For example, between North Front Street and Lakeview Avenue, an almost mile-long infrastructure gap leaves people walking, biking, and traveling along the corridor without a safe, non-motor vehicle option. The neighborhoods adjacent to this stretch of the corridor contain assisted living facilities, hundreds of single-family homes, and the Milford Middle School. On the busiest part of the corridor, north of Delaware Route 14/North Front Street, sidewalks, pathways, and bicycle lanes exist but are disconnected and end abruptly, discouraging use. Other corridor issues include driveways placed too close together, difficult access to bus stops, and difficulty for drivers in recognizing speed-limit changes. Study Schedule The US 113 Corridor Needs Study is taking place between spring 2026 and early 2027. Data collection and analysis will take place throughout 2026, and the community is invited to provide comments on the corridor between September 1 - October 15, 2026. Updates to the schedule will be shared on this page as the study moves forward.  Community Engagement Understanding how US 113 works day to day requires both technical analysis and everyday experience. Community input helps identify where conditions feel challenging, confusing, or unsafe, and where technical findings reflect – or differ from – everyday travel.
