US 113 is a major north–south route through the Milford area. It serves local trips, supports businesses and jobs, and also carries regional and seasonal travel – especially during the summer months. As Milford and surrounding communities grow, safety, congestion, and access along the corridor have become more challenging.

This study is a partnership among the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), the City of Milford, the Dover Kent Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and Sussex County. Together, these agencies are working to better understand how US 113 operates today and what future transportation needs may arise. Seven miles of the US 113 corridor are included in this study, from Route 1 in Milford to north of Road 623 in Sussex County, as depicted in the map below.

Why This Study Is Happening
This effort will use current data, design standards, and today’s community context. The focus is on understanding existing transportation conditions as they are experienced now – including seasonal changes, safety trends, and how different users move along and across the corridor. It will also use the best available data and tools to predict how traffic conditions will change in the future.

This study will not make project recommendations to address the needs that are identified. 

What the Study Will Look At
The study team will examine:

• How traffic operates along US 113 today and how it changes seasonally
• Safety trends and crash history along the corridor
• How intersections and access points function
• How people experience travel along and across US 113, including driving, walking, biking, freight movement, and emergency access
• Transportation needs and challenges, identified using data and community input

To better reflect summer travel patterns, multimodal traffic counts will be collected in early summer 2026, shortly after the school year ends, when seasonal traffic volumes are more representative of peak conditions.
 

Study Schedule
The US 113 Corridor Needs Study will be completed in winter 2026/2027. Data collection, analysis, and public engagement will take place throughout 2026. Updates to the schedule will be shared on this page as the study moves forward.
 

Community Engagement
Understanding how US 113 works day to day requires both technical analysis and lived experience. Community input helps identify where conditions feel challenging, confusing, or unsafe, and where technical findings reflect – or differ from – everyday travel.
